Child Development and Public Health

·         Choose one public health topic
     Access to Healthy Water

·         Describe in what ways this topic is meaningful to you.

This topic was meaningful to me because it caused me to think. As I read different articles and resources about the Philippines and the people that lived in certain areas of the country, just reading caused me again to reflect and thank God because I am truly blessed. The water situation in the Philippines is really terrible. I can’t imagine not having access to healthy drinking water and these people and children do not have access to healthy drinking water and they are also put at risk of being exposed to disease and sometimes death. I really had to take a minute to pause and give God praise for a commodity that is taken for granted but, is so very precious and necessary for us to live.

·         Find information about this topic from a different part of the world

Manila, Philippines is a fascinating Southeast Asian culture but, the quality of the water does not meet the standards of the government. Therefore as a result of contaminated water, water borne disease is a severe public health concern in the country. Manila Philippine is one of the main countries that has contaminated water and the people are exposed to faecal contamination and diarrheal pathogens. It is very possible to get ill from contaminated water and also, contamination will affect the development of the central nervous system in young children. Water pollution has an enormous impact on all lives.

·         Share ways the information you have learned may impact your future work

Sharing this type of information with our children and families will allow them the opportunity to see the importance of having access to healthy water and how the importance and necessity of it impacts the lives of us all.

Janice, you have done an excellent job in providing us with a wealth of information. I agree, I too cannot image not having clean water. But, I do have a question for you… Does UNICEF help in assisting with commodities such as water? I am assuming if the area is vast that can pose a problem; so much to cover at one -time. This is horrible that the citizens are being subjected to this type of living.
Thanks for sharing an imperative insight regarding our health!

Yes, the Joint Monitoring Program(JMP) for Water Supply and Sanitation of UNICEF play a significant roe in increasing the conditions of the water supply in the Philippines. Research say's that the water source was improve by 7% from the year 1990 to 2010.
