Mother: When I think back on my childhood and my
Mom, I see now that my Mother was a dedicated and loving person. She worked very hard providing the best she
could for myself and siblinsg. The most
important thing I remember is that she taught me how to be a lady and never
lower my standard for anything or anyone.
She was my greatest inspiration.
Grandmother: My grandmother was like a second mother to
me. During the times when my mother was
not around she stepped in and made the difference. Her name was Alberta, but we called her Mama
Berta. Everyone in the neighborhood knew
and loved her for her nurturing spirit, her kind heart of compassion, and the
wisdom to teach you the facts of life if you wanted to learn. My most memorable time with her was when
dinner was prepared. She always had a
special setting for me that was filled with unconditional love.
Neighbor: Ms. Weathersby was our neighbor. She was the kind of neighbor you could get a
cup of sugar or eat at her house and feel as if you were at home. She treated me like one of her grandchildren
and she nurtured me just as my grandmother did.
I visited her everyday just to sit with her to keep her company. My most
memorable memoir of her is that she had a black cherry tree in her front yard
and I would always pick from the tree.
When I didn’t pick berries from the tree, she would make me a banana
pudding.
Sister: My oldest sister is someone that I have
always looked up to. I remember her combing my hair for school every day. As a child I loved music. Every now and then
she would let me play her records on her record player. Sometimes she would let me borrow her jewelry
to play dress-up.
Brother: My oldest brother, Perry, was my
protector. Growing up, I was very tiny
and petite; therefore, he was my bodyguard. He would also play
teacher with me. Perry would be the
student and I would always be the teacher.

What a loving support network you had in place! I really appreciate how your grandma and neighbor were role models for the neighborhood. As an adult I really miss that since of community. My children do not really have neighbors that they can depend on for support. When I was growing up it was more than your immediate family watching out for everyone! Thanks for sharing about these special people! I love that you were able to add pictures!
The relationship you had with your grandmother sounds so special. Looking at the black & white prints of their youth are a lot of fun. I once heard someone say, "Grandparents are the greatest invention ever!" I couldn't agree more.
I really enjoyed reading about your loving childhood web! I really like the relationship that you have with your mother, grandmother and siblings. Thanks for sharing your loved ones with us! I enjoyed reading about them.
