My Connections to Play

The essence of childhood, of course, is play, which my friends and I did endlessly on streets that we reluctantly shared with traffic. Bill Cosby

Play keeps us vital and alive. It gives us an enthusiasm for life that is irreplaceable. Without it, life just doesn’t taste good. Lucia Capocchione

When I think about play it causes me to remember my childhood. I had an awesome childhood. I remember playing outside with my friends and having all kinds of fun. When I was a child we improvised and created ways to have fun.. There was so much enjoyment and happiness and we were so overwhelmed until when it was dark we didn't want to go inside. I can remember that i would ask my grandmother if I could go outside and play it was very recreational for us as children and my grandmother encouraged it after of course my chores were done.

I feel today that play is not as wholesome as it was when I was growing up simply because parents these days give their children a laptop or a tablet and call it play. This is not healthy when it comes to the physical, cognitive and emotional development of our children. I believe that children that interact in more  play activities outside are more healthier and are not having issues with obesity.
I truly believe that because I was very active outside and sometimes inside it contributed to the facts that I did not have to visit the doctors very often, although I was a petite  child I didn't have issues with being overweight, I was a very healthy and happy child.

Janice,

I really enjoyed your quotes. I also played outside as a child and had to be pulled inside at the end of the day. I believe that as parents and childcare professionals we have to learn how to temper the need to use technology and the amount of actual play children take part in. I did not have my first computer until I started my undergraduate degree in 1995. So not growing up with it all around me is much different than the world my nearly two year old is living in. I do allow him to use technology; however, his time is monitored and typically he is sitting on my or my husband’s lap. We try to use the time he spends on the IPad for learning and bonding time.
I enjoyed reading your blog. Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
Amanda
