Common Stressors in a Childs Life

Merger (2012) Child Maltreatment is now referred to as intentional harm to anyone under the age of 18 which includes Child Abuse. In our country today we are very familiar with poverty, war, racism and a few more stressors that were mentioned in this course. Child Maltreatment is a global dysfunction that affects all of our lives in some form or fashion. I do not know of anyone personally that has experienced any major stressors and, if so no one has ever shared their experience with me.

Recently I did research on the Philippines and the water system in that country. Today with another task at hand my mind is drawn to this country once again. I believe that not having access to clean and healthy water is considered a stressor and contributes to the unhealthy development of children in this country. The biosocial, cognitive and psychosocial development is effected tremendously.

Water is a very precious commodity and is vital to our existence. Biosocial development deals with your brain, senses and motor skills so, not having clean and healthy water would have a negative effect on a child. Cognitive development deals with the ability to process information and the structure of communication. Psychosocial development deals with your emotions and how children sync relationships with others.

So, all three of these developmental domains are somewhat of a pyramid for the total body. Water is 60% of the body and 70% of the brain, without water we could not survive and the body would eventually shut down. Although the list given for an assignment was not complete but, where only highlights to give us an idea of the major stressors that our children may experience, I would like to add one to the list, as I believe that is a major stressor globally.

Janice~
You have created another excellent and interesting blog! I heard about child trafficking with foreign countries, but I was surprise to find out that here in the United States we’re still having concerns with this. After I read your blog, it stimulated me to do my own research and I discovered an article entitled, “Child Sex Trafficking Growing in the U.S.: I Got My Childhood Taken from Me”. Actress Deni Moore has a foundation that help families with this. The article stated that most children who are sold into sex slavery are children that come from broken families and/or foster homes. (Khan, 2010)This is exactly why we see so many children who are mentally and socially dysfunctional. This is truly disturbing and I’m sure if these children don’t receive the help that is needed, these environmental factors can then trigger other illness. So, it becomes a vicious cycle for our children.

Thanks for sharing such an interesting topic!

Hi Ann
I truly and strongly enjoyed reading your post on the negative input unclean water have on children whole development and leads to such illness as these:
The hidden danger lurking in rural Vietnam is a lack of clean, safe drinking water that exposes students and staff to life-threatening conditions like cholera, malaria and diarrhoea. These illnesses are all preventable in countries like Australia and New Zealand. But in Vietnam, where almost half the population have no access to clean water, and water supplies are often critical, students and teachers can’t safely use the toilet or wash their hands.
